Are there packages for that kernel or you had to use ebuild (compile)?

For a fresh kernel version, there is also a binary package.

what do you mean binary packages how does that work? all i know is to install something you use

emerge -a PACKAGENAME

also i seen there is Calculate Linux 17.12.2 released. what kernel version is that released with?

A package manager can compile a package from the source code or use ready-made binary packages. We compile about 12 thousand packages to speed up the process of installing updates. Each package in the Portage may have several versions. As a rule, binary packages are compiled only for the latest stable versions. The kernel is one of the exceptions. You can unmask the latest kernel version and install without compiling the source code.

You can see the composition of the packages and their versions of each distribution in a file with the extension “list”.
